AI support agents for customer service

The label covers two different things, and the gap between them is where buying mistakes happen. Here is which one Matram is, said plainly: a support agent that answers a whole conversation from your content, not an autonomous system that acts inside your other tools.

  • Answers end to end, with the source page cited
  • Qualifies and captures leads without a human
  • Hands off to a person the moment it should

Two things get called an AI agent

One is a job description. The other is a technical claim about autonomy. Vendors use them interchangeably, which is why shortlists go wrong.

AI support agent, the job

In customer service, the agent is whoever takes a conversation from the first message to the resolution. An AI support agent is software doing that job: reading the question, finding the answer in your material, replying in your voice, and knowing when to bring in a colleague. This is what Matram is.

Autonomous AI agent, the technical claim

Anthropic’s engineering docs define agents as systems where the model directs its own process and tool use to finish a task, acting on outside systems and judging its own progress. Matram is not this. It retrieves from your content and answers. It does not plan multi-step tasks or act inside your other tools.

What it does on its own

Everything below runs unattended. None of it needs a person watching the screen.

Answers from your material

It searches the content you gave it, writes a reply grounded in the passages it found, and links the page it used. Not a general model guessing about your business.

Refuses rather than invents

Strict mode confines it to content you approved. With no supporting source it says so and offers a person, instead of a confident wrong answer, the failure mode that actually loses customers.

Captures qualified leads

It asks for the details you specify, gauges interest in the conversation, and writes the lead to your dashboard for CSV export. A real action, taken with no human in the loop.

Escalates to a person

It hands the conversation to your shared inbox with the transcript attached, and your team replies in the channel the visitor is already using.

Keeps itself current

It re-crawls your sources on a schedule that scales with your plan, so answers track your documentation instead of drifting away from it.

Answers in 95+ languages

It replies in the visitor's language without you building a separate conversation flow for each locale.

How the agent produces an answer

Steps one to four run when you train the agent and on every re-sync. The visitor’s question enters at step five. The two model calls are named so you know what touches your data.

Every answer shows its source

A reply you cannot check is a reply you cannot trust. Every answer links the exact page it drew from, so a visitor can confirm it and your team can see why the agent said what it said.

In strict mode the agent only answers from approved content, so the citation is not decoration. It is the whole basis for the reply. See how grounded answers with sources work across the product.

Support agent vs autonomous agent

Same words, different category. This is the line to check before you shortlist.

Go live in four steps

From a URL to an agent answering in your voice, on the free trial.

  1. 1

    Point it at your content

Paste a site URL or sitemap, or upload PDFs, DOCX and text. The agent reads them directly, with no reformatting on your side.

  2. 2

    It trains itself

Matram chunks, embeds and indexes the content in minutes. You watch progress in the dashboard, then ask it a test question.

  3. 3

    Set the boundaries

Turn on strict mode, choose the lead fields to collect, and set the rule for when a person should take over the conversation.

  4. 4

    Put it where customers ask

Drop one snippet on your site, or connect a channel. The same trained agent answers in every place.

How to test any vendor’s agent claim

One question separates the two categories, and it takes a minute to ask. If the answer is a list of external systems and concrete operations, it is an agent in the technical sense. If the answer is about understanding questions and replying well, it is a chatbot, whatever the badge says.

Apply it to us too. We act on the conversation and on your lead records, and nowhere else. The full agent vs chatbot breakdown is on the blog.

“Which actions does it take, in which systems, without a human approving each one?”

Gartner calls the rebrand agent washing, and reported in June 2025 that only about 130 of the thousands of vendors claiming agentic AI were the real thing.

The chatbot in the corner of this page is a Matram support agent, trained on Matram’s own docs. Ask it something hard and check the source it links.

That is the product, running on itself.
