Zendesk Chatbot Integration: AI Front Line, Zendesk for the Hard Cases

This Zendesk chatbot integration puts matram.ai in front of your support queue. It answers common questions from your Help Center, and opens a Zendesk ticket with the full transcript when a case needs a human.

Zendesk is priced around agents and tickets, so every question your team answers twice is money. A lot of those questions are already answered in your Help Center. People just ask instead of reading.

matram.ai sits on your website as the first responder. It reads your Help Center, answers what it can with a citation, and when it cannot (a refund, an angry customer, an account change) it opens a Zendesk ticket that already contains the whole conversation. Your agent picks up with context, not a blank screen.

This is an add-on, not a rip-and-replace. If you eventually want to move off Zendesk entirely, that is a different decision, and the Zendesk alternative page covers it.

What the Zendesk integration does

The integration connects matram.ai to Zendesk in two directions: it learns from your Help Center, and it creates tickets. Both are live today.

  • Training: import your Zendesk Help Center articles as a source, so the bot answers from the same content your agents rely on, and re-syncs on a schedule
  • Ticket creation: when the bot escalates or captures a lead, it opens a Zendesk ticket with the conversation transcript as the first comment and the visitor set as the requester
  • Automatic subject: the ticket subject is generated from the conversation, so agents can triage the queue at a glance
  • Human hand-off: a visitor can ask for a person at any point, which triggers the ticket instead of the bot guessing

What it does not do, so you can plan around it: it does not replace Zendesk Answer Bot inside the Zendesk Web Widget, it does not sync Zendesk macros, and it does not read your existing ticket history. It answers from your Help Center and creates new tickets. That is the honest scope.

Before you start

Prerequisites

  • A Zendesk account (any Suite tier)
  • A Zendesk API token (Admin Center, Apps and integrations, Zendesk API, add token)
  • The email of a Zendesk agent the tickets will be created under
  • Your Zendesk subdomain (the yourcompany part of yourcompany.zendesk.com)
  • A matram.ai account (7-day free trial, no card)

How to connect Zendesk to matram.ai

Two parts: point the AI at your Help Center for training, then add the ticket connection for escalations.

  1. 1

    Create a Zendesk API token

In Zendesk go to Admin Center, then Apps and integrations, then Zendesk API. Enable token access and add a new token. Copy it now, because Zendesk only shows it once. Reference: Zendesk API token docs.

  2. 2

Import your Help Center as a source

In matram.ai, add a data source and choose Zendesk Help Center (or crawl your help-centre URL directly). The bot indexes your articles so its answers match what your agents would say.

  3. 3

    Add the Zendesk ticket connection

In your dashboard, open the Zendesk action and enter three things: your subdomain, the agent email, and the API token from step one. matram.ai authenticates with Zendesk using an API-token credential, not a stored password.

  4. 4

    Set your escalation rule

Decide when a conversation becomes a ticket: when the visitor asks for a human, when the bot is not confident, or for specific topics like billing and refunds. In strict mode the bot escalates rather than guessing.

  5. 5

    Send a test conversation

From your site, ask the bot something it should escalate. Confirm a ticket appears in Zendesk with the transcript as the first comment and the requester set to the test email.

What data flows between matram.ai and Zendesk

Be clear about direction. matram.ai reads your public knowledge and writes new tickets. It does not touch existing tickets or customer records.

matram.ai reads

  • Your Zendesk Help Center articles (for training)
  • Nothing from existing tickets or customer profiles

matram.ai writes

  • A new ticket on escalation or lead capture
  • Ticket subject (generated from the conversation)
  • First comment (the full transcript)
  • Requester name and email (when the visitor provided them)

Troubleshooting

Tickets are not being created

Check all three credentials: subdomain (no https and no .zendesk.com), the agent email, and the API token. Token auth in Zendesk uses the form email/token, so a wrong agent email fails silently.

The bot answers from stale Help Center content

Re-sync the Help Center source. matram.ai re-crawls on a schedule, but you can trigger a manual re-sync after you publish new articles.

Everything escalates to a ticket

Your escalation rule is too broad or the bot has no content to answer from. Add more sources and tighten the rule to human-request plus low-confidence only.

The requester is blank on the ticket

The visitor never gave an email. Turn on lead capture earlier in the flow so the ticket carries a requester.

Cost

matram.ai is flat: Basic $29, Standard $69, Pro $199 per month, with unlimited seats and a 7-day free trial. Enterprise is quote-based, so contact sales if you need custom volume or invoiced billing. The Zendesk integration is included, not a paid add-on.

Your Zendesk bill does not change to add this, and there is no per-ticket charge from matram.ai. The saving is on the Zendesk side: every question the bot answers is a ticket you did not pay an agent to handle. Estimate your own number with the chatbot ROI calculator. We do not publish a deflection percentage, because it depends entirely on how complete your Help Center is.
