Upload files and documents

Train your bot on PDF, Word, text, Markdown, and CSV files up to 10 MB.

Upload a file

Open your chatbot and go to the Files & Data Sources tab. Upload the file, wait for processing to finish, and the content becomes part of your bot's knowledge.

Matram accepts these formats, up to 10 MB per file:

  • .pdf
  • .docx
  • .txt
  • .md
  • .csv

What Matram extracts

Matram works with the text in your file. PDFs are parsed with text extraction, DOCX files are converted and then read, and .txt, .md, and .csv files are read as plain text.

The extracted text is cleaned, counted in pages, and split into chunks, exactly like website content. One page is 2,500 cleaned characters, so a long document counts as several pages. See how training and retraining work for the full pipeline.

OKF bundles (.zip)

If you keep documentation as a set of linked Markdown files, you can upload it in one go. An OKF bundle is a .zip of Markdown files with frontmatter, in the Google Open Knowledge Format.

  • Upload the .zip on the Files & Data Sources tab.
  • Re-uploading a bundle replaces the whole bundle. The bot never mixes old and new versions of the same documentation.
  • log.md and system files inside the bundle are skipped.

Update or remove a file

Files do not change on their own. When a document changes, upload the new version so the bot answers from it.

Removing a source removes its content from the bot. If you no longer want the bot to answer from an old document, delete that source on the Files & Data Sources tab and the bot stops using it.

Try it on your own content

Everything in this article works the same on the free trial. Train a bot on your site and see it answer with sources.
